Take My Yellow, Give Me Your Red

an interdisciplinary perfomance project based on interviews with Iranian women following the start of the Woman–Life–Freedom movement. These interviews have inspired compositions for dance and cello around the themes of freedom, identity and community.

At the heart of the project are symbols and rituals from the Iranian New Year tradition, Nowruz. The title refers to the traditional fire ritual where people chant: “Take my yellow, give me your red” -a cleansing act that becomes our poetic point of departure for processing both powerlessness and hope.

The project is rooted in the despair over the situation in Iran, yet it reaches out towards universal experiences of oppression, resistance, and the longing for freedom. Our intention is to transform women’s struggles and strengths into a poetic and sensitive performance that awakens empathy and sparks hope in the darkness. By deconstructing and reinterpreting traditional symbols, music, and aesthetics from Persian culture, we create a language that speaks to both European and international audiences—inviting reflection and a sense of connection across cultures.

During the performance, the audience is invited to take part in rituals around the symbols—to sense, touch, and discover their own stories within them. These interactions are woven into the artistic expression as an integral part of the work.

The project has manifested in different versions at various venues:
